Uganda
Update.
4-30-04
Well we know now where we will be going. We will be going to
a small "trading center" called Nkonkonjeru 30 miles east of Kampala. It is a
town that is very alive with market type commerce. The setting can change within
a few miles of the center of the town. We can expect actual structures in and
around the town, but outside a mile or two we can expect grass huts and shanty
type homes. We have also been told that witchcraft is heavily practiced in this
area. We will be staying in a hotel of sorts called Ellie's motel. This location
will actually be guarded during the night to ward off any potential trouble.
The mission has expanded in scope. We have wired some funds
for the locals to begin work on the church building. It may or may not be done
by the time we get there. However we will be conducting a medical clinic,
ministering to an orphanage of nearly 200 children, visiting and ministering in
a local prison, holding leadership and marriage training, doing door to door
evangelism and holding nightly crusades. No doubt our 10 person team will be
stretched thin. We will be accompanied by a variety of local help. We will have
interpreters and elders from the Ugandan Presbyterian church with us. We will
have drivers and cooks assisting us with our daily needs. This is going to be a
wild trip!! I am getting so excited.
I had to get 5 shots in one sitting several weeks ago. These
included Hep A, Hep B, Tetanus, Yellow fever, and something else, I can't
remember. My arms were killing me. I couldn't raise them for days. We also had
to take a series of Typhoid pills. Our passports are ready and our visas are
pending, but God is paving the way for us.
Our biggest material need right now funds. We have wired only
a portion of the needed money to get the church and pastors house built. We are
still about $15,000 short. But God will provide whatever we need and whatever He
provides will be a blessing. But this also doesn't mean we believe God will just
throw the money in our laps. We are currently attempting some fundraising
events. The first one is a huge garage sale. We have asked our church members
and people in the community to donate items to be sold with 100% of the proceeds
to support the mission. The date of the sale is Saturday May, 15 at the Somerset
clubhouse. Drop-off for donated items is Friday May, 14 from 3 to 7 pm.
Other fundraisers are only in the planning stages, more
information will follow as it develops.
We also are in need of items for the orphanage: There
are 188 kids with half boys and half girls and their age ranges from 5 to 12.
The items we need include
(a) Clothes eg Shirts, shorts, trousers, skirts,
dresses and blouses.
(b) Shoes and stockings.
(c) Bed sheets, Blankets and towels.
(d) Washing soap and bathing soap.
(e) School materials like exercise books, pencils and
pens.
(f) Soccer balls.
You can only imagine what a Ugandan orphanage looks like and
the absolute incredible need these kids have for the basics.
You can e-mail me if you would like to donate any items for
either the garage sale or the orphanage

These photos I found on the internet. This is what I think it will be like.
Though I may be way off!
